The policy creates access to an indefinite permanent stay permit for certain people with close family, historical or other strong ties to Indonesia.

What happened
Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration officially launched the Global Citizen of Indonesia (GCI) policy on 26 January 2026. It provides an indefinite permanent stay permit, without requiring a change of nationality, for certain foreign nationals with family, historical or other strong ties to Indonesia.
The announced groups include former Indonesian citizens, certain descendants of former citizens, spouses of Indonesian citizens and children of mixed marriages. Applications are submitted through the official e-Visa portal.

What this means for travelers
This does not affect most tourists. It may, however, create a new long-term residence route for people who fall within one of the eligible groups.
Before applying, verify your eligibility and required evidence on the official Immigration portal: the applicant category and documented relationship determine which process applies.
